Ashby/Ashes

Back in November my sister & I decided to join a KAL to make the beautiful Ashby by Leila Raabe.

Originally, I had decided to make it out of some real Irish sheep wool and chose a light grey hank of Kerry Woolen Mills for my inside and a dark charcoal Bartlett yarn for the outside edging.  My fist attempts with the Bartlett were less than satisfying - first on a size 9 needle, then a size 7 - the yarn was just way too dark and did not show any stitch definition (at least for my wishes)

So I rethought my yarn idea and ditched the Bartlett for future use and wound the Kerry into a ball. What a yarn! It smells of Lanolin, has the combined soft-scratchy feel of true wool and it just amazing.  I cast on and after just the first few rows and cable repeats I knew I had found my right choice.

Happily knitting along finishing all repeats for Chart B, I chanced to weigh my remaining ball and realized, if I were to go the full size I would run out of yarn! Gasp! The yarn shop I had gotten this from was out of this particular color and it had come all the way from Ireland, so not an easy re-order.  What do I do? I found someone on Ravelry selling a hank, but then I would have waaay to much (I was still wanting a dual color shawl). Do I rip back and make a smaller version?

That's what I ended up doing and I LOVE my result. It has kept me comfy and cozy during my recent bout with a nasty cold, I get many compliments on it walking down the street wearing it and I am just totally satisfied.
